Whatever happened to the old gang?

With its revamp in December, Dorseyland closed the Sidebar, and not without regret. For a year the great and the good had hung out at the side of the main page, offering suggestions and occasionally being inspiring.

But by the time Dorseyland was due for a makeover, they'd just become too unruly, and had to be evicted. There were more of them than ever and others applying for admission. The regulars were ordering up HTML code by the jugful and things got out of hand.

An initial attempt to keep the Sidebar open and even expand it had to be abandoned when the guys got so unruly that they knocked the title right out of position and visitors to the blog couldn't find what they were supposed to read. I tried to get them to sit around an HTML table and behave themselves, but it was no use.

So, for old time's sake, this special page has been created as a scrapbook of the way Dorseyland looked in its first year.

For anyone not familiar with all the faces, they are, from top to bottom, Charles Darwin, F Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dali, Jack Kerouac, Alan Shepherd, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Hunter Thompson, David Bowie, Lou Reed, John Cleese, Bruce Springsteen and Homer Simpson. I owe each of them all a big debt of gratitude for putting something important in my head.

Had the Sidebar remained open, chances are they would soon have been joined by Woody Allen, Jules Verne, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and a few others.

There were no women, but I honestly couldn't think of any who had that much of an impact on me, apart from my mother, but she would have freaked if I'd put her in with that mob. Lucille Ball had the best shot, but it didn't seem right.

Anyway, the "boys" have been melted down and sown back into the imagination, where I'm sure they'll still do some good.

Below is the top part of a randomly chosen page from the original Dorseyland, posted here for posterity.
